ID scanner app vs a handheld scanner

We make an app, so treat this with the scepticism it deserves — but the honest answer is that dedicated hardware genuinely wins in some venues, and it is worth knowing which ones before spending anything.

The question worth asking either way: where does the data go?

This is the part that gets skipped in most comparisons, and it is the part with actual consequences.

A scan means holding a stranger's name, date of birth, licence number and often their address. Both apps and handhelds vary from "nothing is stored anywhere" to "everything syncs to a vendor's cloud indefinitely" — and the default is frequently the second one, because a retained database is a product feature to sell back to you.

Worth establishing before you buy anything:

Retention is a liability, not a feature. Data you never stored cannot be breached, subpoenaed, or mishandled by a departing employee. Unless something specifically requires you to keep records, the safer default is to keep less.

Where IdScanner sits

IdScanner is deliberately at the minimal-retention end. There is no account and no server: scan history is off by default, and when switched on it deletes itself after 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days. The ban list stores an irreversible per-install code rather than a name or licence number, and the statistics are counts with no personal data in them.

That is a real trade-off, not just a boast. It means the ban list does not follow a doorman to a new phone, and it means we cannot recover anything for you if a phone is lost. If your venue needs a shared, auditable, multi-device record, IdScanner is the wrong tool and a managed system is the right one.
